Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that precisely removes unattractive fat. Facial liposuction is often called microliposuction because it targets such small areas of fat.
When you get facial liposuction, Dr. Sanders sculpts the shape of your face. For example, he may restore a defined jawline or cheekbone by slimming your neck and removing pockets of fat in your lower face.
Everyone has a layer of fat beneath their skin. In their younger days, the fat under their facial skin is smoothly distributed and contributes to firm, healthy-looking skin.
As you get older, the fat thins out, and your skin loosens, allowing gravity to take hold. The fat can also become malpositioned or drop down. As a result, you end up with a gaunt appearance around your eyes while unwanted fat collects in the bottom part of your face, creating problems like jowls and a double chin.
In addition to age-related fat accumulation, you may consider liposuction to remove fat caused by weight gain. However, liposuction is for contouring, not major weight loss.
If you gain a significant amount of weight in your face and neck, it’s important to lose weight with diet and exercise first. After you get close to your healthy weight, Dr. Sanders can perform liposuction to get rid of the remaining pockets of fat.
Before you have liposuction, Dr. Sanders talks with you about the procedure and the type of anesthesia you’ll receive. He may use one of several techniques that make the fat easier to remove, such as tumescent anesthesia.
Tumescent anesthesia consists of a solution containing pain medication and epinephrine. The mixture numbs the area and minimizes bleeding. The solution also makes the fat cells harden and swell, so they’re easier to remove.
During your procedure, Dr. Sanders makes a tiny incision and inserts a narrow cannula (tube) under your skin and into the pocket of fat. He gently moves the cannula around while suction pulls out the fat cells.
Most facial and neck liposuctions take 30-60 minutes. However, the length of your liposuction procedure depends on the amount of fat being removed.
You wear a compression garment for a time after your procedure. Social downtime is about 1 week. Though any discomfort, bruising, or swelling won’t last long, a full recovery takes 3-4 weeks.
